What Almaty Has to Offer to Travelers

What Almaty Has to Offer to Travelers View large version Once the capital city of Kazahstan, Almaty is a very important financial hub in Central Asia. The cultural importance is what also makes it a very appealing city, especially to travelers from out of the country.

The location of the city is truly a reason for visiting Almaty. When the skies are clear, you can easily spot the snowy mountains to the south.

If you travel to Almaty, you should know that this is one of the most expensive cities in the world. Still, it is worth visiting since this interesting destination has not yet been discovered by many. The people here are very warm toward visitors and you will certainly enjoy their hospitality.

There are many things that you can see inside the city. The Kazakhstan English Language Theater, where you can see some great shows, is very much appreciated by tourists. The theater is mainly used for theater classes in English and for workshops.

The landscape around Almaty is not only beautiful, but also offers some great opportunities to unwind from the hustle and bustle of the city. The Turgen Gorge is a great place to visit. Here, you can enjoy the beneficial effects of the hot springs. You can also hike through the forests and enjoy the beauty of the waterfalls.

Right outside the city you will find the Big Almaty Lake. The views of the lake are really breathtaking as the lake looks like a mirror in which you can admire the beautiful mountains around.

When traveling around the city, you will notice the Presidential Palace. The building and the grounds are really beautiful, but you will not be allowed inside since this is where the president works and is well guarded.

28 Panfilov Heroes Memorial Park, erected in honor of the people that fought and died during World War II, is among the most important landmarks of Almaty. There is a fire burning next to the memorial, which is kept lit at all times. Here, schoolchildren come every year to place flowers in the memory of the dead soldiers. In the same park, there is an Orthodox church dating from the 19th century. Sometimes you can hear the church choir singing.

Almaty used to be the capital, but now the capital city of the country is Astana. The administrative center, once occupied by governmental buildings, is now home to many TV stations. The New Square is also the place where you can take a walk around some really beautiful gardens and a statue representing Altyn Adam, a golden boy of the places, is located here. On the metal bas-relief surrounding the statue, you can follow the entire history of the country.

If you are looking for some fun, you need to visit Medeu, which is an ice stadium the size of an olympic arena. The ice rink is especially popular, but there is also the swimming pool filled with mountain water. In the summer, you can swim in the pool’s waters, if you can handle the 15 degrees Celsius temperature!
